The Wonders of Tourmaline

                Romans used tourmaline to induce a relaxed deep sleep.  China’s highest-ranking Mandarins wore red or pink tourmaline as a sign of station.  The Dutch even called it “Aschentrekker” and it was said to attract and repel ashes when placed near fire embers.  Tourmaline from the Sinhalese word “turmali” meaning “mixed”, appropriately named for this mixed-color crystal. Even the Victorian thinker John Ruskin once said, “It’s chemistry is more like a medieval doctor’s prescription than the making of a respectable mineral.”  This is due to the mixed-color crystal’s complex chemical composition.

                Due to the many colors of tourmaline it has many other names.

                Black tourmaline is called schorl. Some of the other names are:

                Dark blue – indicolite

                Brown – dravite

                Colorless – achroite

                Pale-colored – elbaite

                Green – Brazilian emerald

                Pink to green – watermelon

                Pink – rubellite

                Violet – siberite

                Yellow-green – Ceylon peridot

                Tourmaline is a crystalline boron silicate mineral compounded with elements such as aluminum iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium or potassium. It is a semi-precious stone.  It is a 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
