Tiger iron comes from the Ord Ranges near Port Hedland in Western Australia's Pilbara region. It is an Archaean banded iron formation consisting of hematite, jasper and tire eye ( silicified crocidolite or blue asbestos). This is the only location in the world where crocidolite has been known to occur in iron formations of this age. All other iron formations worldwide are of Proterozoic age. The Ord Ranges consist of a series of small rocky hills that support only spinifex vegetation.
